WUELUG#23: Reuse Code / Code Reuse

There’s an abundance of reasons to reuse code that’s been written before, and lots of ways to do so. This was the topic of WUELUG23, hosted by Innowep at SKZ right here in Würzburg. We looked not only at ways of maintaining and then including generic code into projects, but also at tools and technologies that help with keeping track of reused code.

Background of WUELUG23

Prof. Dr. Weinhold from Innowep GmbH kindly offered to host this session of WUELUG. Innowep has its headquarters right here in Würzburg. For over 30 years, they have been working on studying, analysing and testing surfaces and haptics. Like a few years ago (oh, how time flies, when you’re having fun with #labviewfriends…) we met on the premises of SKZ, the German Plastics Center. The main topic and theme of WUELUG23 was discussing the optimal ways to reuse LabVIEW code.

The Presentations at WUELUG23

  • Reuse Code: Jörg Hampel and Manuel Sebald kicked off the meeting with a loose talk about code sharing and reusing code, with the examples of the HSE Application Template and the HSE S7NetCom PLC Driver.
  • Package Managers and More: Jan Göbel from NI/Emerson presented about the two package manager we have in the LabVIEW ecosystem, the NI Package Manager (NIPM) and the JKI VI Package Manager (VIPM). He highlighted the technical differences, why the NIPM was design as it is and the which package manager is best to use for what (VIPM for source code, NIPM to install applications and libraries).
  • Modular Code with DQMH on an Example at Siemens: Ludwig Berndt from Siemens talked about the encapsulation of code.
  • At the end, we also had an informal discussion on the advantages that the growing number of AI and in particular LLM tools can have for LabVIEW development.

Special Thanks to

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weinhold from InnoWep/ISPA (Institute for Surface & Product Analysis).
Stefan Landstorfer and Jan Göbel from NI/Emerson! And an extra thanks to NI for sponsoring the pizzas, to make sure that only our minds hungered for knowledge.

Looking ahead to WUELUG24

As always, after WUELUG is before WUELUG. Planning for the next, 24th, meeting are already underway. In the meantime, you can find photos and presentation materials from this event on our meeting page:
