Security in Focus at WUELUG#22
The 22nd WUELUG meeting, held at the HSE headquarters on the Bürgerbräu campus, was a resounding success. The theme of the summit—Security and Cybersecurity—highlighted the increasing importance of these topics for the WUELUG members and their customers alike. From internal processes to LabVIEW installations, Software BOMs, network security, and deployment, all relevant subjects were welcomed in our discussions.
Agenda Highlights
The summit started with a warm welcome from Joerg, getting to some housekeeping and setting the tone for a dynamic session.
Matteo Bax from NI/Emerson kicked things off with insightful news about NI’s efforts to strengthen their relationship with the community and customers – also the smaller ones! Followed by Stefan Kissel (NI/Emerson) discussing the current state of security affairs at NI, offering valuable updates straight from their headquarters in Austin, TX. It was good to see, how NI massively ramps up their work on cybersecurity for LabVIEW and the whole ecosystem.
This was followed by a virtual presentation from Cyril Gambini from Neosoft, who focused on security within the NI Linux Real-Time operating system, providing a global perspective on this critical area. Cyril’s tools and techniques in setting up a firewall on NI Linux RT and securing the network traffic with a Wireguard VPN are a must-have for embedded devices that are connected to the internet.
HSE’s own Manu then shifted gears with a practical session on Software BOMs, giving the audience a more tangible and approachable topic amidst the heavier security discussions.
Finally, Oli Wachno rounded out the evening with a deep dive into the regulatory landscape, outlining the increasing legal demands related to cybersecurity and what companies need to be prepared for in the future. With his incomparable manner to present even legal and regulatory content very entertaining, he prepared us (at least a little bit) for the upcoming EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and what impact these new regulations will have on our work.
A Big Thank You to Our Supporters
We are incredibly grateful to NI/Emerson for their generous support in making this event possible. Special thanks to Stefan Kissel for enriching the Austin-originated slides with his own experiences, and to Matteo Bax, who made every effort to join us in person despite his demanding new role as Country Sales Manager Germany. NI’s support didn’t stop at content—this time, they also covered the costs for the venue and catering (pizza included!), reinforcing their commitment to the community.
To everyone who traveled to Würzburg and invested their personal time in our small but mighty community, I sincerely appreciate your dedication. It’s always a joy to meet you all!
